ABC Agents Use Tips From Public to Foil Illegal Moonshiners

Acting on information supplied by area citizens, Agents of the Alabama Alcohol Beverage Control Board are finding new success in cracking down on illegal moonshine stills. Recent tips from residents led agents to two small still operations – one in Elmore County and one in Houston County.

Agents assigned to the ABC Board’s Moonshine Task Force recently received information that a small still was being operated in a wooded area near the Elmore County town of Titus. Last Monday (May 26, 2014) agents moved in on the area and found the still off of Mini-Knight Road. No arrests were made, but the investigation is continuing.

Acting on a tip, ABC agents executed a search warrant on Saturday night (May 17, 2014), at a private residence in the Houston County town of Ashford, about 10 miles southeast of Dothan. Upon entering the home, agents found a nearly-completed still, including a 55-gallon stainless steel cooker. The home-owner, a 36-year old male, was taken into custody and charged with possession of prohibited beverages and possession of marijuana. His name is being withheld at this time pending further investigation. The suspect was transported to the Houston County jail in Dothan. The Ashford Police Department assisted ABC agents with the arrest.

The agents are part of the ABC Board’s Moonshine Task Force that investigates tips, develops leads, and are skilled in tracking and following trails that are often associated with this type of illegal operation. The Moonshine Task Force was formed in October, 2013 by ABC Administrator Mac Gipson. Since its inception, the Task Force has located and destroyed 20 illegal stills and 256 barrels of mash.

Anyone with any information about these stills or any other illegal activity is encouraged to call the ABC Board Hotline at 1-800-327-7341.
